“What’s a Bearshark?”

The young man asked the question so innocently, so filled with wonderment.

“Well you see,” I started. “When a Bear loves a Shark very much, and they want to express that love to each other —”

I saw his eyes widen. I paused and then continued.

“— they will then get into six feet of water and fight each other.”

The boy became confused. “Why would they do that, Dad?”

“Because son. That’s what they do.”

“How long does the fight last?” he asked.

“Six years.” I said.

“Six years? What happens after that?”

“In the seventh year, The Shark gets a hip replacement.”

The boy was confused. “Sharks have hips?”

“That’s not important. What’s important is when the Shark was fully recovered, in the 8th year, the Bear and the Shark stopped fighting each other, and started fighting together.

“Who do they fight?”

“Whoever is dumb enough to fight them.”
